The walk is 9 miles and has 500m ascent/descent, so quite difficult. Initial steady climb along Long Lane then there is a very steep ascent which includes two rocky scrambles towards the peak of Pen-y-ghent. This is strenuous, requiring care and a head for heights, and note the rocks can be slippery even when dry. Descent from the peak has some stone steps and some steep areas but is much less challenging. We then visit the sink hole Hunt Pot which has a very deep drop surrounded by slippery rocks, so great care if you go near to the edge. Option to visit Hull Pot which is a large depression in the ground (collapsed cavern) with cliff like edges, so again be careful close to the edge. Continue along a track to Horton where public toilets are available. Then alongside the River Ribble, parts of this path are overgrown and there are some stiles, to return to Helwith Bridge.
